Abstract

This study aims to describe the effectiveness of implementing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in improving procedural text writing skills of Civil Engineering students at Politeknik Negeri Medan. This research was conducted in response to students’ low ability to compose systematic procedural texts in accordance with Indonesian language conventions, despite the importance of such competence in vocational education. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method involving 26 first-semester students of the MRKG 1-A class in the Civil Engineering Study Program during the 2025/2026 Academic Year (Semester A). Data were collected through classroom observation and analysis of students’ writing assignments. The results indicate an improvement in the quality of students’ writing after the implementation of PjBL, particularly in terms of text structure, accuracy in the use of technical terminology, and the use of imperative sentences. In addition, project-based learning enhanced students’ learning activeness and motivation, as the learning materials were directly related to vocational practices. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that PjBL is an effective instructional model for teaching procedural text writing in vocational higher education.
